Analysis and Observation of the Internal Structure of CFRP and GFRP via a Microfocus X-Ray CT System

Combining a variety of fibers to increase product strength is standard practice. Detailed observation and analysis of the flow of these fibers is important as they have a significant impact on a product's strength.
The Microfocus X-Ray CT System can make 3-dimensional observations of the orientation of fibers, and can perform non-destructive observations of fiber coarseness and fineness, resin bubbles (voids), and cracks.

Example of CFRP Observation

The fibers are carbon, and the black spots are air bubbles (voids).
The parts (welds) where the flow of the fibers has changed can be observed.

Example of GFRP Analysis

By extracting only the fibers and thinning them, it is possible to measure the fiber orientation, density, and number of intersections.
